Volunteers

Reading Matters has a vision of the future in which all children have the reading skills they need for life. Can you help us enable young people to reach their potential by becoming confident, enthusiastic readers?

Investing in Volunteers

“Reading Matters’ Reading Mentors help immeasurably with children’s confidence. I can see by the way the students are behaving in the corridors, the way they get on with their peers in the classroom and their relationships with teachers.” Sue Barraclough, Immanuel Community College, Bradford

We need effective and reliable volunteers to provide one-to-one reading support to children and young people who are struggling with their reading and/or confidence. Our Reading Mentors mainly work in schools in South and West Yorkshire. Being a Reading Mentor is a rewarding and fun voluntary experience.

Reading Matters standard model is for a volunteer Reading Mentor to partner two pupils per term and to commit to a minimum of three ten-week terms (one academic year). They undertake two one-hour sessions per week in school, therefore half an hour with each pupil reading partner twice a week.

As a volunteer Reading Matters Reading Mentor, we will provide you with:

  • A placement in a school or setting convenient to you
  • One day accredited Reading Mentor training
  • Full training pack and resources
  • Reimbursement of travel expenses
  • Termly resource pack
  • Supply of recommended reading resources and activities
  • Invitations to termly top-up training and support events
  • Accreditation in Supporting Reading Skills, Level 2
  • On-going support from our dedicated Reading Mentor Service Manager
  • Long service certificates
We also welcome volunteers to help with administration, social media and business support. If you feel you can give some time or expertise, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
