Our team of trustees:
- Jo Beaumont, Chairperson
Jo Beaumont worked in banking and intelligence services before moving to the third sector in 1998 to develop training and employment support services in the northeast. From there, she moved to West Yorkshire, staying with the third sector and moving into corporate management posts, becoming Chief Executive of a large charity in 2013. Her areas of specialism are in human resource management and change management.
Jo became a Trustee of Reading Matters in March 2015, and Chair in December 2015, motivated by an appreciation of the value of reading skills in supporting wider learning for young people, and for learning throughout life.
- Katherine Ingham, Vice Chair
Kat works currently as the Business and Partnerships Manager for the School of Education at the University of Leeds and is involved in managing the Initial Teacher Education Partnership and overseeing the School’s Strategic Planning, Marketing, Finance and Resources. Prior to this she worked on projects across HR, Communications and Marketing for Morrisons supermarkets. Kat is a qualified secondary school maths teacher and has taught in two schools in Bradford. Having seen first hand the impact that literacy has on students’ learning and enjoyment of school, she is really pleased to be able to support the work of Reading Matters.
- David Powell, Treasurer
David is a retired chartered accountant with wide experience of financial management gained with both multinationals and private companies in the UK and continental Europe. David has been a trustee and treasurer of Reading Matters since 2004. He is a strong supporter of the objectives of Reading Matters because of the importance of literacy skills in promoting social inclusion.
- Janice Beattie
Janice Beattie is currently Group Contact Centre Manager for the Yorkshire Building Society and has been working with them for over 5 years. Her background is in Financial Services & Mobile and she has been a manager for over 25 years. She is currently studying at Loughborough University for a Masters in Leadership & Management. She has people, finance and project experience which she can draw on to help Reading Matters.
Janice applied to be a trustee of Reading Matters as she wanted to give something back to the community, support children to get the best from education and enable them to fulfil their potential, and she believes that Reading Matters fits this bill.
- Jill Evans
Jill is a highly experienced business manager, having spent the last few years as Managing Director of Accord Mortgages part of the YBS Group, and prior to that as Head of YBS Share Plans. In both instances with responsibility for departmental strategy, team development and P&L ownership. Jill recently joined Capita Asset Services to work in their Share plan division. She has been a Trustee of Reading Matters since June 2015. A passionate reader herself, Jill believes that by actively supporting children to reach their reading potential at school, can help them be successful in later life.

- Alan Heath
Alan is a Director and Founder of Learning Solutions, an organisation based in Yorkshire. Since 1996, Learning Solutions has been dedicated to helping children and adults maximise their learning potential. With a background in Psychology and NLP he has also trained extensively in sound and movement programmes and is the UK representative for The Listening Program and co-developer of The Movement Program.
Alan runs a private consultancy for children and adults combining assessment and remediation programmes using sound stimulation, movement and psychology. He is passionate about improving reading and literacy through improvements in sensory processing.
- Dr Andy McElligott
Andy has worked in the NHS for 25 years and is currently the Medical Director of Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust. The Trust is the main provider of mental health and community health services across Bradford, Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven and, as Medical Director, Andy is the Board-level lead for the quality and safety of services. Andy was previously the Medical Director of Bradford and Airedale Primary Care Trust and was a GP for 14 years.
